“My dad’s dead. He was an enforcer for the Mob, but was made redundant after gambling was legalised. He became a hit-man but he wasn’t a very good one. Enforcing and being a hit-man requires different skill sets. It’s not as easy as you think. Most people don’t react well when you try to kill them. Dad missed a mark once too often, and paid the price. If you make mistakes in this job, you don’t get fired, you get dead,” said Bill.
“I’m sorry,” replied Kathy. “I’m sure you’ll find something else you can do.”
“It might be a bit difficult. I can’t register at an employment agency, can I?”
“There are a lot of employment sites on-line. You should have a look, you might get some ideas,” said Kathy.
“Thanks,” said Bill. “That’s a really good suggestion.”
“It’s a pity I didn’t choose a husband on-line,” said Tracey.
“It’s funny you should say that,” said Kathy. “I went to see my clairvoyant, Shimmering Sapphire, today to have a tarot card reading, and she predicted that I would find love on Love-On-Line. It’s an internet dating site.
“I wouldn’t pay too much attention to advice from a person called, Shimmering Sapphire,” said Cindy.
“I kind of like it,” said Nathan. “I once knew a girl whose name was Donna Diamonds.”
“Isn’t she a stripper at The Boom Boom Club on South Street?” I asked.
“Yes,” said Nathan, smiling. “She predicted that I would find love the night I met her, and she was right.”
“You’re a social disease,” said Cindy, shaking her head.
“Hey, she approached me,” said Nathan.
“She’s a stripper. That’s how they make their money,” said Kathy.
“Don’t waste your time explaining it to Nathan like he’s a normal person,” said Cindy.
“Well, I want to know how these on-line dating sites work,” said Tracey. “I’m too old to meet someone at bars and clubs.”
“I wouldn’t mind knowing as well,” said Bill, looking interested. “Now that I’m going to be following a new career path, I could date again.”
“I went on the LOL site when I got home from my consultation with Shimmering Sapphire,” said Kathy. “The way it works is easy. You provide your details. State what type of relationship you want and the characteristics of the person you’re looking for. Register a site name and pay a monthly fee, or buy introduction points. The site processes all the information and provides a list of matches. You can also just look through all the other members registered on the site. If you find someone you like, you send them a ‘knock, knock’. If they send you back a ‘who’s there?’ reply, it means they are interested and want to communicate with you. Then you send them a talk text, and go from there.”
“Knock, knock,” said Cindy to Kathy.
“Who’s there,” answered Kathy.
“The Nut Squad,” replied Cindy. “They’ve come to get you.”
“Well, I wouldn’t mind giving it a go,” said Tracey.
“We could work on our profiles together,” said Kathy.
“I wouldn’t know what to write,” said Bill.
“We could help you,” offered Kathy.
“You just need to be careful that you don’t end up meeting a killer,” I said.
